The past two years have demonstrated that the U.S. economy is not as sturdy as we have always ascertained it to be.  However, many people have managed to get along just fine in the recession, although entering college students have a new burden on their shoulders to find a degree program that will ensure they will have a job upon graduation.  This is a difficult process in any field, but has become even more difficult due to the added pressure.  Even new lawyers are not guaranteed a job upon graduation anymore, creating a pessimistic outlook for new college entrants.

However, there is hope at the end of the spectrum as the economy is slowly rebounding, although many schools have tweaked their course offerings anyway to display more useful school programs for entering students.  Online education has also presented a new opportunity for students to earn degrees while remaining at home (saving money) or working at the same time (saving even more money!).  There are many different types of degree programs available for students of all disciplines and endless choices as well with the advent of online education.  Useful school programs now range from technical degrees in information technology to masters degrees in business, all of which can now be taken from home.

This new prospect in education has emerged at just the right time in modern civilization, especially with the skyrocketing costs of education.  Online schools offer a cost-efficient alternative to earning a degree, something that can nearly ensure you will not go without employment.  Many of the more useful programs schools have begun to focus on include criminal justice, nursing, and business.  These are three areas of education that have remained relatively unscathed throughout the recession, as there has in fact been an increase in the need for students of these disciplines.  As a result, online schools and traditional schools alike have tweaked their programs so that students can earn degrees which correspond more closely to trends in the economy and secure a career upon graduation.

While business has always remained a useful degree program for students during the past few decades, there is a new calling for recent graduates of business who have been trained in degree programs that cater more toward “green” aspects of doing business or even independent business courses.  Because the economy affected the traditional views of business courses in a drastic way, new graduates have achieved their education by taking unconventional courses that employers are now looking at more seriously than before.  This shift in course offerings has been seen throughout different degree programs in nearly every school, as students are now being molded according to potential career options in the future.  Nursing degrees are now more useful than ever before due to the heightened demand for qualified graduates in the health care industry.  Additionally, criminal justice students remain in high demand as well due to the ever-growing need for educated law enforcement around the country.

The underlying message, therefore, is that students should not be afraid of the economy and should enroll in school despite the grim outlook that economists have painted.  Four years from now, the economy will not be so dire, and most schools are looking out for their students, ever-changing their degree programs to create ones that are the most useful for a new generation of students.
