Successfully Transferring Schools

Maybe what you thought was your dream school turned out to be anything but. Or maybe you spent the first few years of your higher education in community college to stay close to home or save money. In any case, your momentous decision to transfer universities does not have to be fraught with stress and anxiety. As long as you begin the transfer process early and take care of all the details associated with switching schools, you should find that transferring universities can be pain-free.

A good portion of college students are actually transfer students, so you do not have to worry about being one of the only transfer students on campus. Many students go through the transferring process every semester. To ensure that yours is free of headaches, begin the process early. This means that as soon as you decide that you would like to transfer schools, begin researching which school you would like to transfer into. Look for schools that have good academic programs, a healthy student life, and a nice campus. If possible, go visit the school before you actually commit to going there. This is especially important if you are transferring universities because you were dissatisfied with your current one. You do not want to go through the hassle of transferring from one unsatisfactory school to another, just to find that the school you moved to is also dissatisfactory. To prevent this, try to visit the school’s campus and talk to some of the current students and instructors there to determine if the school is a good match for you.

Also before deciding on what school to go to, look over their graduation requirements. Some schools have differing requirements so you may end up needing to take extra courses to fulfill your credits before you can graduate. This can mean an additional semester or two in school, which will end up costing more money. Determine whether or not you are willing to sacrifice more time and money to transfer before making a commitment to do so.

After deciding on a school, submit your transfer application as early as possible so that you have time to take care of things that you may have missed. For example, if you accidentally submit your application without your high school transcript, you will still have time to resubmit your high school transcript before the application deadline. If you thoroughly research your transfer school and its graduation requirements before committing and complete your transfer application early, you will find that transferring schools can be a breeze.
