How Graduates Can Give Back to Their Alma Mater
It may seem crazy when you are a student to donate money to your college. After all, you already have tuition bills to take care of, additional class expenses, and the general cost of living. After college, you may be paying off your student loans for another decade. Yet, giving back to your alma mater after you have found workplace success is something that you should consider.
There are a number of ways you can give back to the place where you earned your degree and spent years of your life learning all of the important things that enabled you to be where you are today. Many schools are more than happy to accept gifts from their graduates, whether those gifts are in the form of money, equipment, supplies, or even just time. One of the best ways to stay connected to your school so that you know when you can and should contribute is to join the alumni association for your university. Typically, the alumni association for a school sends its members regular updates about volunteering opportunities, events, and other things going on at the school that you can be a part of. The alumni association may even run its own donation event, allowing members of the association to pitch in together and make one big donation to the school, such as donating a new piece of campus art of even a new set of computers.
However, if you want to give back as an individual, you can always volunteer your time to your alma mater if you live nearby or are in town temporarily. You can sign up to give campus tours to visitors, work the information booths during freshmen orientation sessions, or even just show up to cheer on your team at a sporting event. If you have found ample financial success, you can thank your school for preparing you for such a lucrative career by making a tax deductible pledge to the school, or even by donating as little as $10.00 to a school fund. That money could be used to help fund some much-needed upgrades to a college or to fund scholarships for students who need them.
Giving back to your school should be something that all successful graduates should do. Your school provided you with the education and experience that helped you to succeed in life. It is only in good taste to thank your alma mater for helping you to achieve your accomplishments.
