Choosing a Computer to Suits Your Needs
Finding a computer that is going to meet your needs as a student can be a difficult process as there are many factors to consider. You need to consider all the different brands available and then research the capabilities of all the brands’ different models. An overriding concern is cost. Do you go the cheap route and risk needing to upgrade the following year? Or do you play it safe and invest in a top quality machine at this moment? Finding the right machine to fit your budget is a daunting task. Many colleges now require their students to have a computer, typically a laptop, so you should be aware of all of your choices.
Laptops are the most practical computers for students these days. Many professors will require that you bring your laptop to class for interactive tutorials. Some students already bring their laptops to class each day to take notes. If you are attending a school where there is an emphasis on interactive learning you should look into purchasing a laptop that you are comfortable carrying around with you on a daily basis. This means finding a laptop that is not too cumbersome. The rule of thumb when looking for any laptop is if it’s going to remain stationary the majority of the time, then consider a screen no smaller than 15 inches. If you are going to be lugging it all around campus, then look at laptops with screens smaller than 15 inches.
Another basic question you should be asking yourself is: Mac or PC? Over the past ten years or so, Mac has emerged as a wildly popular laptop across disciplines. It used to be that only art students used Macs. With improved technology, the Mac can now pretty much do everything a PC can. One of the biggest advantages to a Mac is that it is much more resistant to computer viruses. If you have a PC that is not properly protected, then you are bound to spend tons of money on cleaning up any viruses that have attacked your machine. However, many people simply grew up using PCs and are content to stay the course. As with anything, being comfortable with your computer usually trumps any other factors.
As mentioned earlier, cost is a huge concern for any student. Assess your educational needs. Do you need all the bells and whistles available that can drive up the cost of a computer? If you are running on a tight budget, then you need to be discerning when it comes to the millions of applications you could have on your computer. However, if your academic pursuits demand that you have access to certain extras, then consider it another educational expense. Above all else, find a machine with which you are comfortable.
