If you think that taking a course online is going to be a breeze compared to having to go to class every day, think again. While not everyone is cut out for it, there are some ways you can succeed online.

You can succeed in an online course by becoming an independent learner. It is important you become comfortable learning independently, since your class will be conducted through the Internet and not in a classroom. During your class time, you will not be surrounded by fellow students, and the closest you might get to being in a social environment is if you decide to study at a local coffee shop. This is why it is important you learn how to teach yourself by reading and learning material on your own first, and going to your course instructor with any questions second.

Online course instructors do not present lectures to an audience of students. Overall, their work is more one on one, as they will help guide you through the course and give you personal instruction when it is needed.

You can succeed in an online course by becoming an effective communicator. Since you will not be seeing an instructor or classmates face to face throughout the course, you will be doing a lot of written communication, which needs to be clear and concise. Online course communication typically takes place through e-mail or instant messages where you can conveniently contact your instructor with important questions or comments. Course instuctors can have more students enrolled in an online class than they might even have in a regular one, which means they don’t have the time to try to guess what you are asking or what you are confused about. It is important that you are able to specifically identify what you may be having trouble with and explain yourself in a way that is easy to understand. It is best to interact with your instructor as consistently as you can, this will not only ensure that you understand class expectations, but also give the instructor a chance to get to know you a little better.

You can succeed in an online course by being familiar with technology. Online courses take place in a virtual classroom accessed through online management systems. These systems allow instructors to post learning material, discussion topics, assignments, and grades. The course portal allows students to read class material, complete tutorials, participate in group discussions, watch videos, and submit their assignments. To do well in the course, students need to be able comfortable using technology in order to navigate through the system and sucessfully comeplete class assignments.
