Like Movies? You Can Major in Film
Those who want to be the next Steven Spielberg or Roger Ebert may want to consider how they can earn an education that will make that possible. Whether you want to be the visionary who directs the film, or the critic who tears it apart, if you have a love for this type of artistic media, you can major in film.
Film studies majors learn about film history, theory, and production. Along with the creative side of film, such as narrative, style, and influence, students also learn about the technical aspects of film production and technology. Movies are not only a way to occupy one’s time, they are also important forms of art that people use to express themselves and communicate with others. Through screening films, analyzing them, and writing critical essays, film majors learn about all of the artistic components of motion pictures and reflect on their feelings about them. Courses can focus on specific film genres, such documentary, avant-garde, and independent, or topics addressing the social issues of film, acting and directing, video art, and filmmaking. Highly creative students with strong writing and analytical skills who have a passion for the medium of film may be interested in majoring in film studies. Film majors acquire creative and technical skills relevant to the film industry and applicable to movie and televisions careers in directing, screen writing, editing, set management, and advertising. They can pursue jobs as film editors, film archivists, production assistants, film historians, film editors, and film critics.
Film production majors learn about the process of how people, ideas, and technology come together to create motion pictures. When it comes to film, every scene matters and gives meaning to the script through lighting, framing, and composition. Majors learn about the details that go into filming a scene and how they work together to portray the directors message. Students not only learn how to make movies by shooting film, but learn about the role of each person on a film set through working hands on with sound and lighting equipment. Majors take courses in cinematography, videography, directing, and screen writing, as well as courses that focus on production, such as studio television production, digital editing, and sound design and production. Students who are highly visual and as creative as they are observant may want to major in film production. Through this major students will receive a broad education in film that will give them the qualities necessary to pursue careers as directors, camera operators and editors, set designers, and film and TV technicians.
