African Studies

Globalization is affecting all corners of the world, including Africa. African studies is the study of African culture and language in relation to the role of Africa in the world. Those who choose to major in African studies will learn about African cultures and traditions, how those same traditions and cultures are holding up in today’s increasingly modernized society, and the languages spoken in the country. All of these topics prepare students for a future in working extensively with the African people. Courses that African studies majors will take include African literature, culture analysis, African influence on America, African history, African religion, and African folklore.

Those who major in African studies are typically fascinated with African culture. Graduates of this major may go on to become anthropologists specializing in African culture and history or social workers whose expertise is in dealing with Africans either in America or in Africa. Social workers in Africa may work with helping refugees, providing education and medical care to African communities, or aiding Africans in general by striving to improve their quality of life. Those who are curious about the development of African culture would find great fulfillment in African studies and likely will be able to use their education to aid the plight of Africans worldwide.
