Art Therapy
The healing power of art is utilized by art therapists as they work with those who suffer from mental and developmental disorders. They attempt to connect with their patients by bringing out their thoughts and emotions through creative self-expression. The feelings conveyed by patients are determined by their manner of expression; more specifically, their content and form. It allows for the psychological process to be observed when it can’t be verbally. Students in the major must become familiar with aspects of therapy, psychology and visual art. Related courses usually include applications of adapted art, sculpture, ceramics, abnormal psychology, lifespan psychology and general psychology.
Art Therapists are creative yet caring individuals who seek alternative therapeutic methods. They’re employed by psychiatric hospitals, out-patient clinics, social services agencies and schools. Not only do they deal with people who are developmentally challenged, but they also treat people who are learning disabled and socially neglected. Demand for recreational therapists in general is supposed to increase in the coming years due to the aging and expanding population. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment is expected to grow by 15 percent through 2018. Major cities specifically will provide opportunities for art therapists because varying forms of therapy will be needed for patients of all ages.
