Astrophysics
As evidenced by its name, astrophysics is the combination of astronomy and physics. Students in the major gain a better understanding of the universe and its components through the use of physics and mathematics. They gain in-depth knowledge in mechanics, electromagnetism, electricity and quantum theory. Subjects such as general relativity and galactic dynamics are explored. Skills acquired in the program are computer programming, research and problem solving, which will be useful in future career and academic endeavors. Some examples of clases taken by astronomy students include principles of astrophysics, observational radio astronomy, observational optical astronomy, stars and star formation, and cosmology. A benefit of the major is that classes are small at most colleges because of the challenging nature of the discipline; therefore students receive hands-on instruction from their professors.
There’s an ever-increasing demand for researchers and professionals in the field of science, especially with the recent increases in federal funding. New graduates can find entry-level research positions at aerospace companies or national observatories. In order to become more attractive to employers, students will need to pursue a PhD. Astrophysicists who perform some of the most interesting and advanced research in the field work at major universities. Graduates may also prefer to teach at public schools in an effort to inspire curiosity in the next generation of astrophysicists.
