Roughly two million species live on earth and new forms of life are being discovered all the time, so there’s always new and interesting information to be absorbed. Biology majors have an interest in examining a variety of living organisms – simple and complex – from every level of nature. The discipline encompasses the study of animals, the study of plants and the study of how all organism function. In the program, students are introduced to the foundations of genetics, ecology, microbiology, and cell and molecular biology. Students will to take classes in chemistry, physics, botany, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular genetics and symbiosis.

Students who have attained their bachelor’s degree may pursue a master’s degree in more specialized fields such as forensics, wildlife biology, pharmacy, and biochemistry. Biology provides a foundation of knowledge for those who aspire to enter the medical field – it has long been a popular pre-med, pre-vet and pre-dental major. Of course, additional teachers and researchers are needed as knowledge becomes more advanced in the field. Biological Scientists in general will be in demand in the coming years as biotechnology expands. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment is expected to increase by 21 percent through 2018. For their work, microbiologists, physiologists, geneticists and zoologists receive an average compensation around $100,000 per year.
