Biotechnology

Biotechnology is an area of biology that involves genetic engineering of living organisms for the production of pharmaceuticals and other useful products. Biotechnology majors will learn about the manipulation of genetic material, as well as using molecular biology to develop new products for health care and agricultural uses. Students will perform experiments to analyze human responses to medical treatments and other scientific procedures that test the safety and effectiveness of medicines. Throughout the course of a biotechnology curriculum, students can expect to take classes in biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology and biotechnology, as well as calculus, statistics and technical mathematics classes to meet the industry’s research and production techniques needs.

Biotechnology students will be qualified to work in a number of biotechnology positions, such as lab assistant, research assistant, media prep technician, quality control inspector and other technician occupations. The most common science fields that use biotechnology are medical research and development, agricultural research and development and production. In any one of these fields, you can assist in developing safe and effective products or methods. A biotechnology major is perfect for students who are passionate about biological sciences, and want to apply their knowledge and skills toward developing products for the greater good.
