Cell Biology

Cell biology is a scientific discipline centered on the human body’s most fundamental building block — the cell. Cell biology majors will gain a broad understanding of cell properties, functions, structure and life cycle through the study of cellular molecular biology and genetic regulation. Using various techniques from a variety of different disciplines, students will learn about the intricate components of cells and how they work. Cell biology curriculum emphasize experimental approaches and techniques that provide students with insight to understanding the importance of cellular organization and processes. In addition to general chemistry and biology classes, cell biology students will also take courses in molecular biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, physics, and even calculus or statistics. An understanding of mathematics is important for a cell biologist, in order to quantify experimental results to determine if a specific set of data represents a real effect or a statistical anomaly.

Cell biology graduates will be qualified to enter various health-related professions and do research in biomedical or other life sciences. Those who have a deep understanding of cellular and molecular biology can apply their knowledge toward a laboratory research career, assisting clinicians and physicians in medical experimentation, understanding and diagnosis of diseases and the development of new treatments. This degree path is perfect for students who are passionate about science, and wish to gain hands-on experience working with some of life’s most complicated creations.
