Cinematography
Cinematography is the art of motion-picture photography. Students in this fine arts degree will be trained in the aesthetic, technical and organizational factors of filmmaking. They will explore the art of motion-picture photography, by studying framing, lighting, camera choices, camera movement and other creative aspects of cinematography. Because cinematography encompasses more than just motion-picture film, but also videography and digital cinematography, students will learn about modern image processing and trends in artistic direction. Cinematography majors can expect to take classes in lighting for film and television, cinematography and directing, digital cinematography, as well as electives in film and television historical studies, screenwriting, makeup and costume design or production design.
Graduates of a cinematography program are qualified to work in various film and television careers, sharing their artistic skills and technical knowledge. Many graduates go on to become cinematographers, who are responsible for the technical and aesthetic aspects of images. Graduates can also work as part of the camera, grip or lighting crew on a movie set. Students who are passionate about movies, television and photography, and have a keen eye for detail may excel in a cinematography degree program.
