Criminal Justice

A criminal justice major teaches students about the justice system and the role of law enforcement. Throughout a criminal justice program, students will learn about the many careers and purposes of serving and protecting the public, as well as understanding crime and developing ways to prevent it. Because criminal justice is somewhat of a broad subject, students may focus on one particular area, such as law enforcement, forensics or criminal justice administration. Students will study law enforcement management, behavioral sciences, forensics, terrorism and intelligence. Some common classes they’ll take are foundations of criminal justice, criminology, contemporary issues in criminal justice, criminal law, criminal procedure, sociology and organizational behavior and management.

Criminal justice graduates are eligible to work in many different areas of criminal justice and law enforcement. Many of them go on to work for a Federal law enforcement agency, such as FBI, DEA and CIA agents, as well as correctional, police, probation officers at the local and state level. Those who have good people skills, enjoy helping others and are law-abiding citizens are good candidates for a criminal justice degree. Also, students who are genuinely interested in solving crime and analyzing the criminal behavior of accusers will be of great use in this industry.
