Culinary Arts

A culinary arts major encompasses the art of cooking and the business aspects of owning a restaurant. Culinary arts students will learn cooking techniques, food presentation, kitchen management, as well as sanitation and the laws governing food preparation. Culinary arts students can expect to take classes in food science, foundations of baking, nutrition, food service sanitation, menu planning and purchasing, basic garde manger, banquets and catering, professional cooking, restaurant management and other related topics. Students will spend the majority of their time learning in a kitchen, but they will also be given reading and writing assignments.

Graduates of a culinary arts program are eligible to work as a chef, dietetic technician, nutritionist, restaurant manager, health educator and food service manager. They can often find work in restaurants, at catering services, cruise lines, nutrition clinics and other work settings that involve food preparation, food service and food handling. Those who are deeply passionate about food and thoroughly enjoy the act of cooking will be at home in a culinary arts program.
