Education

Education majors are designed to equip students with the skills necessary to become effective teachers in elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools across the country. Students learn to put together effective lesson plans, to use creative examples to aid in the learning process and to adhere to standards put in place by state governments. Students learn how to cultivate gifted children, how to work closely with students who are falling behind in class and how to address issues like bullying and class disruptions. Courses you may encounter in an education major include: school health & safety, education in a multicultural society, special education techniques, working with English as a Second Language (ESL) students, and educational philosophies.

If you have a love for working with children and desire to see them succeed in the classroom, then you may want to consider majoring in education. An education major will not only prepare you for the job by requiring that you student-teach before graduation, but it will also prepare you for state certification examinations. Career opportunities include: substitute teachers, elementary school teachers, principals, special education teachers, Gifted & Talented teachers, school counselors, high school teachers, teachers who also coach a sport, teacher’s aides, and mentor teachers. With experience and a graduate degree, some teachers are ideally-placed to move into administrative positions within school districts, such as director of curriculum & instruction or even superintendent.
