Environmental Sciences

Environmental Science majors learn about the natural environment and how it is affected by sources of pollution. They study biological and physical sciences and discover how they can be applied to environmental issues to solve problems affecting the environment. Environmental science majors take basic classes in mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. Mathematic classes, such as calculus and statistics, serve as a foundation to help students understand sciences and interpret data. Scientific classes, such as organic chemistry, conservation biology, and basic physics, serve as a foundation to help students understand environmental sciences. Courses dealing specifically with environmental sciences may include; energy and environment, restoration ecology, environmental law, and environmental economics.

 A degree in environmental sciences can prepare individuals for careers in natural resources management, hazardous waste management, land and water conservation, parks and outdoor recreation, and environmental education and communication. Employment opportunities are typically available at waste management firms, government agencies, treatment plants, and nonprofit organizations. Those with a strong interest in science, excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for the environment, should consider pursuing a major in environmental sciences.
