Illustration

Illustrators assist writers by bringing their characters to life, and work according to their ideas and specifications. As illustration majors, students will learn about the artistic impact of color, detail, and different drawing techniques. They study the human and animal forms and their expressions, characteristics and movements, and learn how they can be realistically recreated. Education typically begins with introductory classes in drawing, photography, and art history. More advanced coursework includes illustration classes such as, drawing and perspective, cartooning, inking comics, face illustration, and animal anatomy. Illustration majors may also take courses concentrating specifically on philosophical aesthetics, computer design methods, and the business of art.

A degree in illustration can prepare individuals for careers in art, film, industrial design, advertising, and the craft industry. They can be cartoonist, film animators, character artists, graphic novel or book illustrators, and biological and medical illustrators. Employment opportunities are typically available at publication companies, advertising agencies, film studios, internet media companies, and within design and creative departments. Many illustrators are also self-employed and do freelance work for small businesses or private individuals. Creative individuals who are imaginative and enjoy coming up with original looks and ideas might want to major in illustration. A degree in this field might also interest those who are inspired by stories as well as listen to and work well with others.
