Library Science

A major in library science is most often dedicated to preparing students at the graduate level for careers in or related to libraries. Students learn vital research and organizational skills relevant to work in a library. Courses in library science might include cataloging and classification, collection development, library administration, the history of books and printing, and media as an information source. Library science courses are also known for helping students develop plans to encourage reading in different communities by launching summer reading programs, developing attractive resources for young adults and providing storytelling and craft projects for children to help bring families to the library. Students also learn how to search for books, articles or media using computer programs, the Internet and microfilm.

If you are a voracious reader, wish to promote literacy and have a deep appreciation for freedom of speech in the U.S., than you may want to consider a career in library science. To qualify for most librarian positions in public, academic and special libraries, you must have a master’s degree in librarian science, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Therefore, when choosing this major, a student can know they are taking the right educational path toward their goal. A major in library science can prepare you for careers such as library director, children’s librarian, reference librarian or special collections librarian.
