Marketing

Marketing is the study of getting a product or service noticed or ideally placed in order to attract customers and increase sales. Marketing is often offered as a focus under the umbrella of a business major, but is increasingly being offered as its own major. Students in this major learn about the role of marketing in today’s society, as well as effective, practical marketing strategies they can incorporate into a number of business and not-for-profit fields. Marketing courses typically include: marketing management and leadership; market research; consumer behavior and buying habits; marketing strategy; and international marketing. Internet marketing, a relatively new branch of marketing, is a course that is rapidly being incorporated into most marketing programs.

You may want to consider a major in marketing if you are business-minded, but like the idea of working on the promotions side of things. It is also a solid major for innovators and creative types who relish the thought of developing solutions that lead to increased sales. Marketing also happens to be a major broad enough to encompass a wide variety of career opportunities. A marketing major can prepare you for diverse careers in publicity, market research, retail marketing, advertising, public relations and media relations. Other careers in marketing might include brand development and management, consulting, market analysis and event planning.
