Medical Technology

The medical technology major is usually offered by a university’s biology department. The major is designed to prepare students to work with specialized medical equipment to perform tests in clinical laboratories. In fact, the medical technology major is often used interchangeably with the clinical laboratory science major. Medical technology plays a central role in hospitals and clinics, especially in the way diagnoses are made from blood and fluid samples. Medical technology majors learn to use high-powered microscopes and precision instruments and become fluent with medical terminology. Common courses in a medical technology major might include: advanced chemistry, microbiology, anatomy & physiology, computer science, biostatistics, immunology (the study of the immune system) and hematology (the study of blood). Students generally are required to perform a large amount of hands-on lab work.

Medical technology is an excellent choice of major for individuals who want to work in a medical field, but not necessarily in direct patient care. Students who are interested in science lab work and technology will also enjoy the medical technology major. Medical technicians most often enter employment in hospitals and laboratories, where they provide lab data to physicians and other medical staff. However, some work for medical research organizations and pharmaceutical companies. Others go on to work in blood banking careers.
