Military Science
The military science major is interconnected with a university’s ROTC program, an elective course that is tailored to prepare students for careers in the U.S. Army. It is not typically considered a major in itself and is usually taken in conjunction with another major, such as nursing or business. The major focuses on academics, physical fitness and leadership and aims to promote teamwork. Military science is unique in that many courses include field activities held out of doors, such as marksmanship training, obstacle courses, repelling and other military-style training activities. The more academic-style courses in the military science major include U.S. history, military ethics and military law. Other courses might include: Intro to ROTC, Self/Team Development, Individual/Team Tactics, Applied Leadership & Management and Traditions of the Military.
Those who want to enter one of the many careers available in the U.S. Army find the military science major program and ROTC to be excellent educational and physical preparation. Those who complete this major program often go on to accept commissions as second lieutenants, officers in the U.S. Army, typically after four years. Some cadets go on to build a lifelong career in the military, while others serve for a few years and then use their leadership training to enter civilian careers, such as nursing or information technology (IT).
