Music
Even before they enter college, most music majors have already demonstrated a certain level of musical proficiency. The curriculum in a music major is designed to build on this talent. Students in a music major hone a variety of musical skills, including harmony, conducting, piano proficiencies and vocal proficiencies. Music theory and music history are also important elements of the major. Some courses you may encounter in a music major include: Composition; Film Scoring; Music Production & Engineering; Music Therapy; and Fundamentals of Western Music. While students will have ample opportunities for solo performance, students are usually required to participate in one or more music ensemble courses as well, learning what it means to contribute to the greater sound.
If you have natural talent as a musician, it is a good idea to continue pursuing that talent at the college level. A music major will challenge you and sharpen your skills with the help of music faculty who are experienced musicians in their own right. A major in music can also prepare you for a variety of excellent career opportunities. Students have moved on to become studio, orchestral or jazz musicians; major performing artists; back-up vocalists; sound recording technologists; music critics or music teachers at a variety of levels. Still others become disc jockeys (DJs), music video producers, talent scouts or music promoters.
