The purpose of a major in photography is to teach students the essential skills involved in capturing compelling images. Students learn the ins and outs of digital and film cameras, their components, settings and how they work. The major helps students to explore photography as an art form and as a viable business. Students will learn effective photography techniques, photo editing, portrait photography, nature photography, action photography and even photojournalism. However, they will also learn business principles to help them find success in the industry, such as how to market a photography business, how to build clientele and how to manage the finances of a photography business. Courses might include: visual communication, fashion photography, black & white photography, Adobe Photoshop, graphic design and printmaking.

Career opportunities include: fashion photography, portrait photography, art photography, photojournalism, wildlife photography, wedding & event photography and even underwater photography. All are very competitive industries and a college education goes a long way toward equipping people with the credentials and skills they need to be successful or to break into a niche career. Photography skills are also useful in certain areas of law enforcement and forensic science, as photos are often needed of crime scenes and as a means of documenting criminal evidence.
