Psychology

The psychology major is a combination of science and humanities. Simply put, it is the study of the human mind and the behavior it dictates. Students seek to understand why people react to their environment in certain ways by relating it to the biology of the brain. They study intelligence, emotion, motivation, cognition and perception. At a broad level, psychology helps us better understand the world in which we live. Students may explore why some humans are prone to crime or illicit behavior. They may study why some populations live in constant turmoil. Courses in the discipline cover counseling, behavior analysis, developmental psychology, comparative psychology, memory, learning, thinking and decision making.

Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in psychology have skills that will translate in different areas. They may find employment in government agencies, businesses and health care organizations. Other fields loosely related to the major in which many graduates have found work include market research, public relations and human resources. If an advanced degree is attained, positions in academic research, teaching and counseling can be had. Those with a true passion for the study of psychology may seek a PhD so they can become psychologists – the field is expected to grow by 12 percent through 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
