Degree Description: The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Saint Leo University is a 39-credit degree program that consists of a foundational overview of the concepts of psychology. This degree gives students an overview of the many different subfields of psychology, as opposed to a specialized concentration in one area that students might receive from a bachelor’s of science degree, so as to provide students with a well-rounded education that could prepare them to continue studying or to make use of their knowledge as they enter the workforce. Aside from general education requirements, courses related to the major include Research Methods, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Sensation and Perception, and a Senior Seminar. In order to graduate, students must complete 122 credit hours of work over four to five years of study, depending on part-time or full-time status. The cost of tuition is $465 per credit hour plus course materials.

Degree Outlook: With a bachelor’s degree in psychology, graduates are qualified to assist psychologists in their research, counseling, and other practices. For example, a graduate could get a job as an assistant in a mental health center or a correctional program. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that opportunities will not be as great for those who have bachelor’s degrees. Fortunately, a bachelor’s degree in psychology also prepares students for other careers, as the knowledge they gain in the program can be applied to all kinds of situations. For example, an understanding of psychology can be useful in a sales job or in a marketing firm. That said, if you are interested in becoming a psychologist, use your bachelor’s degree in order to prepare you for graduate study in order to become a doctor of psychology. Job outlooks for psychologists over the next eight years are very good; the Bureau expects job opportunities to grow by 12 percent through 2018.
