Spanish

Latinos make up more than 15 percent of the US population and they’re growing at the fastest rate of any minority group. It’s becoming increasingly necessary for people in government, schools and businesses to learn Spanish. College students are choosing the major to not only become bilingual, but also to gain insight into the rich culture of those who speak the language. In the program, they study Spanish history, literature and film. Of course, students must become familiar with linguistics and grammar in order to grasp those lessons. They will be required to write and speak on a daily basis under the instruction of native speakers. Specific classes in the major may include intro to literature, Spanish-American culture, advanced oral practice and Spanish business. Most programs give students credit for studying abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, so there are an abundance of opportunities for people who can speak it fluently in addition to English. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of learning the language is gaining the ability to live and function in many different countries. Recent graduates can find careers in social services, teaching, marketing, writing, editing, importing and exporting, travel and international banking – to name a few. Students can attain a minor or second major to supplement the degree and acquire more specialized skills.
