Sports Management

Sports Management is a new and exciting major that’s perfect for students with a passion for sports and business. The sports industry, which is closely related to the entertainment industry, generates hundreds of billions of dollars of revenue per year. Trained professionals are needed to manage, market and operate sports teams, programs, franchises and facilities on the amateur and professional levels. Students in the major become familiar with areas of sport management pertaining to law, accounting, economics, ethics, sports information systems and facilities management. Some of the more unique classes within the major may deal with sports in American culture and sports history. Students get hand-on experience with field work as upperclassmen.

Graduates find careers in college and professional sports, retail marketing, fitness, and athletic and recreation administration. Specific positions that students attain are general manager, head coach, director of tickets sales and director of promotions. It can also be used as a pre-law major for aspiring sports agents. The field is perpetually growing, especially as sports teams and organizations expand and seek new streams of revenue. Although the field is competitive, opportunities always exist. The benefit is that once graduates are knee-deep in the field, they’re truly members of sports teams and organizations.
