Zoology

Zoology is the study of animals – but not necessarily within the confines of a zoo. Students in the major become knowledgeable in animal biology, studying everything from cells and organisms to entire populations and their ecosystems. More specifically, they’ll learn about the structure of organisms and how they function. Skills gained in the major include problem solving, technical, communication and research. Students become active participants in their learning environments through lab experiments and fieldwork. Two essential courses are animal anatomy and physiology. In addition, numerous science and zoology courses will be required, such as animal phylogeny, ecology, animal behavior, cell biology and chemistry.

Graduates have the opportunity to find employment in the field of science, especially if they pursue an advanced degree. Many chose to explore the disciplines of biology, ecology and conservation as researchers, teachers or professors. Zoology is also a useful in preparation for veterinary, dental and medical school. Students have also been known to become environmental consultants, wildlife biologists and lab technicians. Employment in general for biological scientists is expected to grow by 21 percent by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is due to the new knowledge uncovered by ongoing research. Zoologists have the potential to earn high pay: they earn an average salary of $116,908 in the federal government.
